Kentucky Science Center

SCA has completed numerous projects at KSC starting with the renovation of the Carter Dry Goods Building in the 1970s to become the Museum of History and Science. Other notable projects include the 1988 renovation to create the IMAX Theater, assisting “The World Around Us” projects, moving the NASA space capsule into and out of the facility, and even adding Lottie the Dinosaur to the roof of the parking structure elevator tower in 2022.

The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts - Plaza Repairs & Restoration

SCA’s most current project at the KCA involves the restoration/replacement of much of the front plaza construction which had deteriorated over its 42-year history. With a complex structure of new steel framing, concrete slabs and stairs, the project incorporates replacement structures that will serve the public for many years to come.

Commercial

Riverfront Garage & Belvedere Plaza

SCA completed much of the structural design for Louisville’s redevelopment of the waterfront area between 3rd and 6th Streets, north of Main Street, beginning in the early 1970s. The Riverfront Garage supports the Belvedere Plaza which has served as a focal point for many downtown events. The Belvedere extends over I-64, and this entire structural complex ties into the original Galt House Hotel and connects to Main Street via a ramp system and the Belvedere Connector, constructed in the mid-1990s, completes the connection of Main Street to Louisville’s wharf.

Kentucky Exposition Center

SCA has a long history with the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center with repairs and modifications to many of the facility’s 1950s era construction. Press Box additions and major reinforcements to slab structures at the now demolished stadium, lowering of the floor of Freedom Hall, and additions to the fairgrounds complex of the South Wing B, South Wing C, and North Wing are representative of our past work.

Hospitality

The Galt House Hotel

As part of the redevelopment of Louisville’s Riverfront, SCA has completed structural designs for all of the Galt House’s different structures encompassing the city block just west of 4th Street to 2nd Street. Major projects include the Galt House, Galt House East, Galt House Apartments, Ballroom, and the Waterside Towers 1, 2, and 3. Connecting these structures is the 4th Street “Turnaround” project, which is the elevation roadway structure extending 4th Street north to the area between the Galt House and Galt House East. Major renovations in the early 2000s included a modified overhead walkway between the hotels known as the “Conservatory” for its spatial truss design and glass elements.

Religion

St. Joseph Catholic Church - Restoration

The repair and restoration of the twin steeples at St. Joseph Catholic Church in the Butchertown area of Louisville involved the investigation, structural analysis, and repairs to slender 80-foot-tall wood steeple structures extending into the skyline over St. Joseph Church. Investigations found the 150-year-old wood elements were plagued with rot from moisture penetration as well as past termite infestations. Three-dimensional structural analysis efforts were combined with unique solutions to replace entire failing wood elements by a very resourceful general contractor.

Education

Saint Xavier High School - Callahan Media Center

The St. Xavier Media Center incorporated challenging modifications to an existing masonry structure combined with a new steel structure to connect to the main school building. Removal of load-bearing walls, modifications to existing clerestory framing, and found conditions during the work made this project all the more challenging.
